Everyone is talking about the Sparwasser goal on 22 June 1974 in Hamburg, which gave the GDR team its only victory in a World Cup match fifty years ago. But the joint german-german football history is longer and more interesting than this legendary match. The two national teams met a total of six times and none of these matches between the GDR and FRG were just about football. Who was the winner on the pitch and who won in the political arena?
